The physicians of Oregon Neurology Associates are
the region’s leading
experts in comprehensive and thorough neurological
care. While neurology is the sole focus of our highly trained neurologists, many of them have
advanced subspecialty education in such areas as
child neurology, epilepsy and neuromuscular disease.
They also have special interest in Parkinson’s disease, multiple
sclerosis, stroke, and other conditions that are difficult to diagnose.
Because there are more than 1,000 neurological disorders with complex and widely varied symptoms, we’re accustomed to spending the time needed to make a conclusive and accurate diagnosis. We welcome even the most complicated cases, and have earned a reputation for tenacity in solving challenging diagnostic puzzles. We’re sensitive to the worry our patients are experiencing, and we value open and honest communication and compassionate care. We take time to make sure our patients understand their neurological conditions, and involve them in weighing their options and making decisions about managing and treating their disorders.
NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES
Neurological diseases are disorders of the brain, spinal cord and nerves throughout the body. Because the nervous system controls all sensation and behavior, the symptoms of neurological disorders can vary widely. Those symptoms may include poor memory, poor balance, headache, blackouts, seizures, speech disorders, trouble swallowing, numbness or loss of sensation, spasms, tremors, difficulty controlling urination, and a host of others.
The major types of neurological disorders include:
- Genetic diseases, such as Huntington's disease and muscular dystrophy
- Diseases of the blood vessels that supply the brain, such as stroke
- Seizure disorders, such as epilepsy
- Degenerative diseases, where nerve cells are damaged or die, such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease
- Improper development of the nervous system, such as spina bifida
- Injuries to the spinal cord and brain
- Cancers of the nervous system, such as brain tumors
- Infections, such as meningitis
- Peripheral nerve disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
Below are some of the most frequently diagnosed neurological disorders. (For more information on these disorders, visit this website of the National Institutes of Health.)
